This solution was created out of necessity. While a self-cancelling signal system would be ideal, it requires a connection to the steering column’s rotation to detect when the wheel has returned to center — indicating that a turn has been completed. For many vehicles, this type of integration is not readily available, which has led to alternative approaches.

One common alternative uses a timer within the signal circuit to automatically deactivate the signal after a preset period, similar to lane-change modes found in many modern vehicles. However, we strongly oppose this approach due to significant safety concerns.

Our testing shows that, on average, a driver encounters a driveway entrance or intersection approximately every 10 seconds. In town settings, this interval can be even shorter; in rural areas, slightly longer.

Consider the implications: if a timer allows a signal to remain active for 30, 60, or even 90 seconds, how many unintended or misleading signals are being communicated to other drivers during that time?

Conversely, a lane-change timer that cancels too quickly can also be inadequate — and in some situations, unsafe — if the driver is still maneuvering.

Relying on a fixed timer to deactivate a signal, regardless of whether the vehicle is still turning or has already passed multiple intersections, is not a dependable solution.

The only thing worse than no signal is the wrong signal.
